Startup Purgatory

Hello All!

Happy Social Media Week! How are you celebrating? Hopefully by doing lots of tweeting, attending lots of events, and generally appreciating the fact that we live in a brave new world where we can interact with extraordinary people all across the globe just with our two thumbs and a spotty 4G connection. If you’re anything like me, you’re at the point where you can’t watch the State of the Union, the World Cup or an episode of Community without keeping one eye on your Twitter feed. And this is by far not a bad thing.

I have always wondered what people in different parts of the country, with different experiences and backgrounds and opinions thought about whatever was happening in the world, but it just wasn’t possible before. But now I can keep in touch and understand the pulse of the globe better than ever possible. And it’s not just the Tweeter that keeps me connected. LinkedIn has proven that Kevin Bacon isn’t the only person connected to everyone by six degrees. The world is so small it’s scary and realizing that we’re all connected to everyone else by one or two people has made me seriously rethink eating tacos in public. #notcute I even have to give a shoutout to Facebook, which I really really hate, but which allows me to have amazing conversations in private groups with some of the best treps (and people) I know all over the world. It’s amazing how often I’ll travel for an event just to meet someone with whom I’ve been co-commenting in a Facebook group for months. We live in an extraordinary world, one that our parents could never have imagined and that has the power to take us to heights we can’t begin to fathom. I wonder if Alexander Graham Bell knew what he was doing when he hooked up the first phone line, picked up the receiver and said “Hello”.

Here are a few great articles about Social Media that I just couldn’t resist sharing:

Other stuff to learn about
Social media is great but there’s other stuff out there too. Here’s some of it:

Got Funding?
We can’t get enough of talking about money and Howard University is putting on another great funding event tomorrow night. Go. Fund. Win.

Fashion for Everyone!
Love fashion? Love retail? Know nothing about either? This event is for you! The new DC branch of OS Fashion is hosting a fashion and retail Town Hall at iStrategy Labs on Feb 27th. InfoHERE!

SXSW
If you’re heading to SXSW, send me a note and we’ll have a mini-DC meetup! And if you’re not going, WHY NOT? Make this a thing people. For seriously.

That’s all folks! Have a great week and remember every day that being a trep is awesome. Even on the worst days, you could be in a cubicle. Wearing a suit. *shudders*

In treps we trust,
kat
